Author James L. McCoskey, from a small town in southern Indiana, had no idea what to expect when as a young Army officer he shipped off to Vietnam in 1964. He would end up serving three combat tours there—first, as a young captain advising a South Vietnamese field artillery battalion in 1964, later in 1966 and ’67 during intense combat with the Army’s famed Big Red One as a field artillery battery commander and artillery liaison officer with the division’s cavalry squadron, and then finally in 1967 and ‘68 as one of General Westmoreland’s staff officers in MACV headquarters during the Tet Offensive. McCoskey’s memoir provides vivid details of what life was like for a junior Army officer serving in three distinct phases of the Vietnam War. The book also chronicles much of the history of that time, as seen through the eyes of a young American in a time of war, including glimpses of Vietnamese culture and the author’s insights into his, and America’s, role in the war. The book also includes many photographs McCoskey took during the action at various points during his three combat tours.McCoskey’s natural storytelling style makes this an easy read, and adds color and interest to his narrative. This war memoir is a valuable contribution to the body of work chronicling the personal histories of the men and women who served in Vietnam, and will be of interest to any student of history, fans of military biographies, or anyone who likes an enjoyable read.
